The event is organised under the COST Action InsectAI – Using Image-based AI for Insect Monitoring & Conservation (CA22129), in collaboration with Universität Marburg, the Marburg Botanic Garden, and MAFEX.

Insects are among the most abundant and diverse groups of organisms on Earth, with more than one million species described to date. Despite their ecological importance, insects remain significantly understudied and underappreciated. The rapid decline of insect populations across the globe highlights the urgent need for efficient and standardised monitoring methods.

Inspired by the traditional “BioBlitz” concept, the BionicBlitz combines biodiversity observation with cutting-edge image-based artificial intelligence and automated monitoring technologies. The event seeks to demonstrate how AI-powered tools can support insect monitoring and conservation.

Participants will join a multi-day mission to document as many insect species as possible at the Marburg Botanic Garden using both traditional field observation methods and emerging AI technologies. Throughout the event, visitors will be able to observe how automated devices collect and process biodiversity data in real time, creating a direct comparison between conventional BioBlitz activities and next-generation monitoring systems.

The event will bring together entomologists, computer scientists, hardware developers, conservation practitioners, innovators, policymakers, students, citizen scientists, and members of the public.

What is a BionicBlitz?

During the BionicBlitz, participants will be able to:

• Visit the Sensor Trail, featuring demonstrations of automated insect monitoring systems;
• Attend workshops on topics including hardware challenges and solutions, alien species detection, educational outreach, and “Kit4Kids” activities;
• Participate in a traditional BioBlitz and record insect observations using the iNaturalist app;
• Engage with experts from ecology, AI, engineering, and conservation, and
• Explore interdisciplinary collaborations and career pathways linking biodiversity science and technology.

By combining biodiversity, artificial intelligence, and citizen science, the BionicBlitz aims to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and increase awareness of innovative approaches to insect monitoring and conservation.
